Ali helps save the day
Wolverhampton Homes concierge supervisor Babar Ali went above and beyond the call of duty when he helped talk down a young woman who was threatening to jump from a high rise flat.
Babar (known as Ali) was doing his rounds at Boscobel estate, near the city centre, when he spotted the distressed woman on scaffolding at the tenth floor of the high rise flats at Weston Court. She was very upset and said she was going to jump.
He reacted quickly and called for the police and ambulance service but the woman would only speak to Ali and a female police officer.
They spent four hours talking to her and she finally came down safely and went with the police. The incident happened early on Saturday, 27 September.
Ali has now been put forward for a special staff recognition award at Wolverhampton Homes.
The 33-year-old, who has worked for Wolverhampton Homes and the city council for the last 11 years, said: “As soon as I saw the lady I could tell she was distressed and I asked her to sit down and talk to me to gain her trust.
“I am pleased everything ended well and the woman came down and went with the police.”
John Hopkins, concierge manager for Wolverhampton Homes, added: “I believe Ali’s prompt actions saved the life of this young woman.
“This is a magnificent example of his dedication to duty and the manner in which he carries out his duties - Wolverhampton Homes is extremely proud of him.”
Wolverhampton Homes has a concierge service in high rise and low rise blocks in nine areas of the city which provides a range of services including caretaking, tenancy and estate management, security and information.
