Tenant Shadrack Mbatha has won a prestigious award as Apprentice of the Year at the NFA Awards.

From a factory role in manual labour to excelling in customer service, Shadrack has come a long way. Shadrack worked long hours in warehouses doing manual work. He wanted a change so enrolled at University to study social policy. To support his family, he started zero hours agency work while he studied, but barely had time to see his children.

Despite the long hours, combining work and studying, he successfully finished his degree but was stuck without any office work experience.

Never one to give up, he joined our “Learning, Employment and Achievement Programme”, known as LEAP, which helps tenants into work through training and work experience.

After completing his eight week work experience he started his apprenticeship as an administration assistant. During that time he:

  • Completed his NVQ Level 2 in Business Admin within ten months.
  • Delivered a passionate speech about his story to leading councillors, MPs and senior directors of Wolverhampton Homes.
  • Received compliments from councillors and tenants for speedy, thorough and efficient resolution to queries.
  • Was such a valued member of the team that his applications for two permanent, part-time roles as Community Impact Officer and Housing Officer were successful, one month before he completed his apprenticeship.

Shadrack’s success has given him more confidence in his work and in his personal life. He is a passionate advocate for LEAP, telling his story to encourage more tenants to join.

Shadrack said:

I never in my wildest dreams imagined working for an organisation this big, without prior experience in social housing. My dreams have now become a reality, where the sky is the limit. I'd encourage all tenants to join LEAP so that they can discover their true potential.

Congratulations Shadrack!
