Stay fire safe this festive season 🎄

Christmas Tree 2023 (2)

As the festive season approaches, in partnership with West Midlands Fire Service, we want to help everyone to enjoy the holidays in a safe and secure manner. From decorating your home to taking part in celebrations, it's important to keep safety in mind. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and avoid potential hazards during this time of the year:

Water your Christmas tree

  • Keep real Christmas trees watered to prevent them from drying out
  • Dry trees can pose a fire risk, so ensure they stay well-watered
  • Keep water away from lights and cables to avoid electrical issues

Look after your lights

  • Check the condition of your Christmas lights before use
  • Consider replacing old lights with LED sets, as they are a safer option
  • Turn off Christmas lights and powered decorations when leaving home or going to bed

Mind your plugs

  • Avoid overloading sockets and extension cables
  • Never leave items charging under pillows or on/in your bed
  • Don’t overcharge items. Once they’re charged, unplug them

Opt for LED candles

  • LED candles are a safer alternative to real candles, as they don't get hot
  • If you use real candles, never leave them unattended and keep them away from flammable items
  • Maintain a safe distance between candles and flammable decorations or curtains

Test your fire alarms

  • Test fire alarms weekly to ensure they are working #TestItTuesday
  • Never remove the batteries from alarms, even temporarily

Use gadgets and chargers responsibly

  • Follow manufacturers' guidelines when using gadgets and electrical presents
  • Only use the chargers and cables that come with your devices to avoid potential hazards - don’t use fake chargers
  • If cables become broken, frayed or damaged, stop using and replace them

Safety whilst cooking

  • Avoid consuming alcohol before or during cooking
  • Never leave a cooker unattended when in use to prevent accidents and fires

Wishing you a festive season filled with joy and safety. By incorporating these tips into your preparations, you can create a secure and pleasant environment for yourself and your loved ones. Stay safe, and enjoy the festivities!
