If you are in immediate danger call 999.
Domestic abuse
If your partner, ex-partner, or a family member is causing you mental or physical harm or distress, you may be experiencing domestic abuse.
Examples of domestic abuse include controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, and psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional abuse.
Help is available if you are experiencing domestic abuse and we work with a wide range of agencies to keep people safe. Help is also available to perpetrators of domestic abuse to support them to manage their behaviours and make positive changes.
If someone is hurt or in immediate danger call 999.
Where it is safe to do so, Wolverhampton Homes will work with you to help you stay in your home if you are experiencing domestic abuse.
There are different ways we can support you to stay safely in your home.
Legal protection
You may be able to get a court order to help protect you and your children from abuse, threats, harassment, or intimidation.
These include:
- Non-molestation orders, which can help stop someone from abusing or contacting you
- Occupation orders, which can decide who can live in or visit the family home
- In some situations, it may be possible to transfer a tenancy into your sole name through the court.
Our Domestic Abuse Officers can explain these options and help you understand what may be right for your situation.
Home security improvements or advice
Extra security measures may help you feel safer at home. These can include:
- Additional locks
- Securing gates
- Other safety advice tailored to your needs
You may also be able to access the Sanctuary Scheme, provided by The Haven Wolverhampton, which can help with additional security equipment such as door cameras.
If you need to move home
Staying at home is not always the safest option.
If you need to move because of domestic abuse, Wolverhampton Homes will consider your circumstances and any supporting information you provide.
We will consider your housing options and help you access the support available.

Joining the housing register
If you are experiencing domestic abuse, you may be able to join the housing register even if you have not lived in Wolverhampton for the last two years.
You will need to provide supporting information about your circumstances.
Emergency help
If you need to leave your home immediately because you are at risk of harm, you can ask any local authority for help.
In Wolverhampton, you can contact the City of Wolverhampton Council Housing Advice Service on 01902 556789.
Looking at all housing options
There is a high demand for social housing and a shortage of available council homes. This means waiting times can be long, and some people may wait more than 18 months for an offer of accommodation.
Because of this, it is important to consider all available housing options, including private rented accommodation, which may provide a quicker route to a new home.
Refuge accommodation
A refuge can provide safe temporary accommodation and specialist support if you need to leave your home because of domestic abuse.
In Wolverhampton, refuge services are provided by The Haven Wolverhampton.

Other housing providers
Information about other housing providers in Wolverhampton can be found on the City of Wolverhampton Council website.
Mutual exchange
If you are already a social housing tenant, a mutual exchange may help you move more quickly.
A mutual exchange is where two social housing tenants agree to swap homes.
More information is available at HomeSwapper.
