Setting up a proxy

If you would like someone to speak to us on your behalf, known as a ‘proxy’, you can appoint a relative, friend, or advocate. They can discuss matters such as your rent account, housing application, tenancy support, or make a complaint for you. You can also choose to have your correspondence sent to them.

How to give permission

We take your privacy seriously and will only share information if you give written permission. This makes your proxy an authorised contact. Once you request this, we will arrange to meet with you and your chosen proxy to complete the paperwork together.

Please contact us to request permission.

Important things to know

One proxy at a time: A proxy arrangement means just one person can speak on your behalf. This helps us keep your information secure and avoid any confusion about who we should speak to. You stay in control—if you ever need to change who this is, just let us know and we’ll update it for you.

Relationships change: Think carefully before appointing someone. If you are unsure, consider an advocate or professional representative. Please view more details on the City of Wolverhampton Council’s website - Advocacy Service.

Being a proxy is not Power of Attorney: Allowing someone to speak on your behalf does not mean they have Power of Attorney. A Power of Attorney is a formal legal document that gives someone the authority to make decisions on your behalf about important matters such as your finances, property, or health and welfare. This is different from a proxy arrangement, which only allows someone to speak to us about tenancy-related issues. Please view the Government's website for guidance on setting up a Power of Attorney.
