We are aware of a hoax article being circulated on social media which has been designed to look like a post from the Express & Star. This article is fake and has no connection with the Express & Star. The post makes a number of false statements about the risks to residents from asbestos in Pennwood Court, Highfields Court and St Joseph’s Court in Merry Hill, Wolverhampton.

We would like to reassure residents that your safety is our top priority and we will do everything in our power to ensure no one is put at risk from asbestos.

Asbestos is present in some of the materials used to build these blocks of flats, and is commonly found in building materials made during the 1950s up until around the year 2000. Asbestos can be found in drainpipes, floor tiles and textured wall or ceiling coatings. These products and materials pose no harm so long as they’re in a good condition and are not damaged.

We will be carrying out work to upgrade the tower blocks at Merry Hill. This will include renewing the main service supplies that run through the building, the fire doors to the flats and those in the communal areas, the communal lighting, as well as installing sprinklers. We will also be replacing the cylinders and storage tanks in flats, and installing new flooring and decorating communal areas.

This work will involve the removal of some asbestos materials and will inevitably result in the disturbance of others. All work involving asbestos materials is undertaken by our specialist Asbestos team, who are fully licensed by the Health & Safety Executive to carry out work of this nature. Their work is also monitored on-site by an independent specialist who ensures that there is no risk to anyone whilst the work takes place or after it’s finished. The Asbestos team is audited regularly by independent experts and following their most recent audit in November 2019, they received a certificate of excellence.
